Project Aims

To make the internationally significant fossil ichthyosaur collection belonging to the Alfred Gillett Trust accessible to the public after 40 years in storage through public exhibitions and engagement projects with local schools and community groups.

Key Outcomes

Documentation and digitisation of the collection, identification by specialists, remedial conservation and redisplay of fossils, public exhibitions of the fossils, promotion of collection through articles, conferences and publicity. This project made the collection accessible to remote researchers for the first time and identified a new species of Ichthyosaur in the collection, which was named Ichthyosaurus somersetensis in honour of importance.
