The Sustainable Somerset Museums project focused on giving volunteers and staff in small community museums the skills and professional support to improve their economic sustainability. The aim was to enable museums to develop practical strategies to cope with challenges and to become more self-sufficient at income generation.
The outcome of this project was a countywide skill analysis of 24 museums are their staff and a consultant-led sustainability report on the general health of 8 museums. This was based upon survey responses and 1-2-1 work and focussed on museums’ product, operation and marketing. This highlighted areas of potential development and lead to the creation of individual SWOT analyses and realistic action plans. The key areas targeted by the project and subsequent organised training were income generation, marketing, volunteer management, audience development, forward planning and social media.
